Excuse yourself from Shiva, a Hindu deity who would have created Varanasi some 5,000 years ago, when he set foot in the most sacred city in the country. On the ghats, extensive staircases facing the mythical Ganges River, the interesting, chaotic and authentic local life takes place: daily washing of clothes, spiritual baptism baths, dramatic outdoor cremations, sadhus ceremonies – Indian holy men. This is where Varanasi shows his strength early in the morning, when devotees take a boat in prayer during the sunrise. In the maze of streets behind the ghats, the colorful bazaars that sell mainly exquisite silks, yoga schools, hotels and restaurants of all kinds pulsate. And, of course, the shrines and altars for the thousand gods of Hinduism.
